Fault cause and repair method:

When inspecting the rust cracks on the weld on the side plate of the excavator arm, the surface paint layer and rust of the weld should be scraped or polished. Tap the weld with a small hammer when observing, and use a magnifying glass when necessary.

1. Causes of cracks

The causes of the cracks in the side plate of the excavator arm include bubbles, slag inclusion and tiny cracks in the original weld. When the excavator is overloaded, there will be tiny cracks at the original weld, and slowly expand: cracks that do not match the performance of the welding rod and the plate: because of the large size of the excavator arm, it is difficult to adopt reliable and effective heating and insulation measures. In the process of operation, the vibration and impact are relatively large, and the uneven stress at the weld leads to weld cracking.

2. Repair method

Preparation before welding: Use hand grinding wheel to remove oil, paint and rust at the original weld crack. The weld cracks are cut off with air gouger, and the body of the side plate is planed to remove the hardened area of the base metal which has been welded in the past. After planing, use an Angle grinding wheel to smooth the incision (the inner interface is ground into a V-shaped groove). After cleaning and pink inspection, confirm that all cracks have been found and removed.
